Court housing at Pembroke Place
Exploring the history of Pembroke Place has revealed its surprising, fascinating and sometimes gruesome past – which will be featured in special Hallowe’en tours on 30 and 31 October
With Heritage Lottery Fund support, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Museum of Liverpool have been exploring this amazing street. Volunteers working on the Galkoff’s and Secret Life of Pembroke Place project have used historic newspaper, census returns, and street directories to understand the history of the street. The historic newspapers capture tales of the ghastly goings-on which happened in the Victorian period in that area.
One policeman reported in court in 1878 that the area was known as ‘Little Hell’ because of the dreadful deeds: murders, brothels, and violence characterised the place!
