‘When I’m 64’ BBC Radio Merseyside’s sing-along, part of Pepper at 50
So far we’ve seen diamonds fill the sky over Camp Hill; billboard memorials to Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, and a psychedelic mural on the side of disused grain silo and there’s even more to come during the run of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club’s Band’.
The undeniable influence of this seminal album has inspired an eclectic array of responses by artists and groups. At Museum of Liverpool, home to an important collection of Beatles material and an immersive show which looks at the band in the context of their home city, we’re looking forward to offering our friends at BBC Radio Merseyside a little help with their strand of the festival; a city-wide sing-along of the track ‘When I’m 64’!
Choirs, schools, buskers and in fact anyone else who loves to sing will join with presenter, Sean Styles, as the song is broadcast on Radio Merseyside at 10.30am on Thursday 8 June.
In our Atrium space we will be tuning in, turning the sound up and inviting all our visitors to join in. Don’t worry if you can’t remember the words we’ll have lyric sheets at the ready and you certainly don’t need to be a professional singer, all we require is enthusiasm. Although if your name is Vera, Chuck or Dave you are especially invited!
‘When I’m 64’ was actually written by Paul McCartney as a teenager and it routinely became the song the Beatles would sing around a piano when their amplifier broke or the electricity went off in their early days.
