Inspired by my interest in the Liverpool Beat Poets and driven by my love of poetry, on Tuesday 21 March I will be celebrating World Poetry Day at the Museum of Liverpool with some special free events.
I will be taking a closer look at the poets who are featured in the Wondrous Place gallery at 11am and 1pm , delivering talks about Roger McGough, Brian Patten and Adrian Henri – the beat poets who shot to fame with the compelling poetry anthology book The Mersey Sound(1967) selling 500,000 copies.
As part of this creative movement in Liverpool in the swinging sixties these individuals were able ignite something within society, they crawled inside the brains of many and infused the youth with determination, inspiration. Their humour and lack of pretention helped them to keep their feet on the ground, resulting in them being able to reach so many more people with their art. These three oozed charisma and stage presence, along with like-minded individuals immersed themselves in the imaginative and artistic atmosphere.

On World Poetry Day there will also be a free drop-in workshop from 2-4pm, where you can come along to read, write and create your own poetry notebook to take away with you, while finding out more about the art of poetry in a relaxed atmosphere designed to inspire creativity and improve wellbeing.
Poetry has always been something that I have dipped in and out of and always returned to time after time, whether I am in a good mood or a bad mood, feeling tired or uninspired.
Reading, writing and listening to poetry can be like therapy and for me the art of the written and spoken word has been such an inspiration and comfort all the way through my life. From Roger McGough, TS Eliot to Shakespeare there is always something that can put a smile on my face.
