Social media is a great way for our museums and galleries to connect with visitors with fun facts, behind the scenes previews and exciting videos.
Here at National Museums Liverpool, we have eight museums and galleries and we have Facebook and Twitter profiles for all of them, plus a YouTube channel, Instagram account and Pinterest profiles where you can see great videos and pictures.
We currently have 56,147 Facebook fans across our accounts and 79,734 followers on Twitter, plus we’ve gained 2,000 Instagram followers in just a year of running our Walker Art Gallery account. Our social media following has increased year-on-year and allows us to give sneak peeks into the work we do, the objects we care for and our special exhibitions, as well as creating conversations here in Merseyside, across the UK and even further afield in America, Australia and Asia.
Did you know that there are 2.3 billion active social media users? Facebook has 1.65 billion users worldwide, YouTube has over one billion users, Twitter 320 million and Instagram has 300 million.
You might wonder why it’s important for a museum and gallery service to be on social media? Social media helps us to talk to more people in a way that they enjoy, and it’s a great chance to encourage people to visit our museums and galleries. In fact, in 2015-16 we saw an increase of 7% in the number of visits to our museums and galleries resulting in more than 2.8 million visits.
National Museums Liverpool has its own organisation account @NML_Muse, or you can follow conversations on all our venue accounts on Facebook and Twitter.
*Social Media Day is created by digital news website Mashable to celebrate social media’s impact on global communication.
