Last chance to see Merseyside Maritime Museum’s ‘On the Waterfront’.
Dads can be so difficult to buy for. Three times a year – birthday, Father’s Day and Christmas – I find myself agonising over what to get the man who says he doesn’t actually want anything anyway.
Our venues have some cool gift ideas but if you’re also looking for some inspiration on how to spend the day, then look no further, we’ve got a few suggestions!
Who doesn’t love a walk down on Liverpool’s beautiful waterfront? A stroll around Albert Dock and the Pier Head takes in three of our museums. Pop into Merseyside Maritime Museum to catch the last day of ‘On the Waterfront‘, a brilliant spotlight on the way Liverpool’s docks transformed the fortunes of the city.

Or why not try ‘Afro Supa Hero‘ at the International Slavery Museum? It is a must-see-exhibition for any dad who has fond memories of popular culture of the 1960s and 70s. The exhibition explores role-models and cultural identity, featuring comics, action figures and other ephemera collected by the artist Jon Daniel.

‘Reel Stories’ explores the city’s relationship with film at Museum of Liverpool
Is your dad a film-geek? If so ‘Reel Stories: Liverpool and the Silver Screen‘ over at Museum of Liverpool is a real treat! A treasure trove of original film posters and memorabilia, the exhibition explores Liverpool’s unique relationship with film; from Hollywood blockbusters which use our architecture as a dramatic backdrop, to the multitude of films in which Liverpool itself has starring role, telling the stories of its people and culture.

Dad and son in Walker Art Gallery
Across the city the impressive architecture and cobbles of William Brown Street provides a great day out for your dad. Call into World Museum to inspect the incredible array of specimens in the museum’s Bug House or travel across the globe in its World Culture’s gallery. Further up the road the Walker Art Gallery is bursting with fascinating art. From contemporary to traditional, there is plenty to keep even the fussiest of dads interested.

Newly refurbished South End galleries at Lady Lever.
Is your dad a collector? For any dad with hoarding tendencies a trip to Lady Lever Art Gallery might be just the thing to blow him away when he sees what was amassed by just one man! The gallery is home to a portion of the more than 20,000 objects of fine and decorative art, textile, sculpture and furniture collected by Lord Lever, founder of Lever Brothers. Your dad can take the opportunity to look around the gallery’s newly refurbished South End. Following a £2.8 million major development project, funded by Heritage Lottery, these galleries have been returned to their original architectural splendour.

Family visit to Sudley House
On big family outings finding something which appeals across generations can be tricky. However a trip out to Sudley House in Mossley Hill has something for the whole family. Whether it’s tea and cake in the café, a kick about in the grounds or a stroll around the art collection of this Victorian merchant’s home, this is a very fine way to spend a Father’s Day afternoon!
