Army themed memory suitcase
For the last few months I’ve been working on a very exciting new project in connection with the Museum of Liverpool’s award winning House of Memories. The programme has helped thousands of healthcare professionals and family members increase their understanding of how to support people with dementia to live well with dementia.
My role is to work with the Armed Forces community to develop a new strand of House of Memories, funded by the Armed Forces Covenant. This has involved a great deal of consultation with people to ensure we are making the experience as relevant as possible.
Working with our drama partner, we will explore what dementia is, through stories that will resonate with the Armed Forces community. Those attending will find out how to use the Museum as a ‘giant memory box’ to help engage with those living with dementia. Based on the feedback from our community partners, we will also be creating a new Museum memory walk and develop three distinct memory suitcases, based on the Services – the Navy, Army and Air Force.
Later in the summer, a new exhibition First World War: Charity and Liverpool’s Home Front, will explore 100 years of charitable giving, in support of the armed forces and their families, particularly in Merseyside. Many organisations have contributed; some have evolved enormously since the First World War, while others have been created to support the Armed Forces communities with the different challenges they face.
It is really exciting to think that House of Memories will be helping servicemen and women and their families, and I hope that the Museum of Liverpool can make a valuable contribute to supporting the Armed Forces community in Merseyside.
