Adam Hodson
In the lead up to our OUTing the Past Festival of LGBT History at the Museum of Liverpool, 23 February, we will be sharing blogs from our wonderful speakers.
Third up is Adam Hodgson. Adam is one of the co-convenors of the UNISON North West LGBT Group. He works for Merseyside Police and has been a UNISON activist for ten years. He tells us more –
“UNISON is the largest trade union with over 1.3 million members working across all public services. 2019 marks 25 years of self-organisation in UNISON, which ensures LGBT, women, black and disabled members all have the ability to determine and enact their own priorities and policies within and alongside the union.
This presentation will look at how UNISON’s LGBT self-organised group came into existence, the struggles it went through both externally and internally, including the difficulties it faced in changing from a lesbian and gay group to an LGBT group, and some of the successes the group has had in making public services better for all LGBT people, including arranging the first official strike over the sacking of a gay worker.”
