Welcome guides for World Museum, Museum of Liverpool and Merseyside Maritime Museum
National Museums Liverpool, working with partners Autism Together, has signed up to the Autism Charter to help make our museums and galleries more autism-friendly for visitors, families and colleagues living with autism and learning difficulties.
We have produced a new range of Welcome guides for the museums and will be rolling out new guides for the galleries later in the year. We’d love you to take a look and let us know what you think of them. We hope they will help visitors prepare for a visit and answer many of your questions during a visit. They can be downloaded from our website or copies can be borrowed from the information desks at World Museum, Museum of Liverpool and Merseyside Maritime Museum.
Visitors are welcome to visit us at any time during our opening hours (daily 10am to 5pm, except 24, 25, 26 and 31 December and 1 January when we are closed for the holidays) but we understand that museums can sometimes be noisy and distracting so we promote quieter times for visitors where the museum environment is made more comfortable by varying light and sounds levels where possible. Generally our quietest times of the week are on Sundays between 10am and 12 noon but we also run regular quiet mornings at the Museum of Liverpool, Merseyside Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum, for forthcoming dates check the website. For quieter mornings at World Museum’s blockbuster temporary exhibition China’s First Emperor and the Terracotta Warriors book your tickets online on the recommended mornings (Sundays 24 June, 19 August and 23 September)
We offer resources including ear defenders, pop up tents and quiet rooms to use as safe, calm spaces if a visit becomes overwhelming, please call your chosen venue in advance if you’d like further information about these. Staff are trained to identify when a visitor may be in need of additional support, but please ask staff for assistance at anytime during a visit if required.
We accommodate schools and community groups including individuals with additional needs and offer tailored education sessions on request. Please discuss your needs by emailing educationbookings@liverpoolmuseums.org.uk
