Blackler’s giant Santa at the Museum of Liverpool keeps a watching eye over ‘honorary elf’ Bernice Blundell, Partner at FPC and a House of Memories elf.

This December, National Museums Liverpool’s House of Memories team will be delivering a special gift to people living with dementia across the North West.

Last week, dressed as Santa’s helpers, the team set up an ‘elves workshop’ to pack and wrap festive Memory boxes to send out to care homes and their residents.

The packing session was overseen by the giant Blackler’s Santa in the Museum of Liverpool Atrium, who made sure the mince pie-fuelled elves completed their festive task.

125 boxes were filled with nostalgic toys and games, memorabilia, memory trees, seasonal health and wellbeing activities and a House of Memories Christmas card.

Christmas is a special time of year for many of us as we enjoy sharing memories of Christmasses past. However this is often not so easy for people living with dementia.

With this in mind the special memory boxes have been created to evoke festive memories and encourage group activities and interaction between people living with dementia and their carers during the month of December and beyond.

Carol Rogers, Executive Director of Education and Visitors at National Museums Liverpool, said:
“Christmas is a significant time of year for many people, coming together to make and share memories.

We hope our House of Memories gift boxes bring joy throughout the festive season and welcome new participants to our 2018 programme at the Museum of Liverpool.”

The Christmas campaign is sponsored by the Financial Planning Corporation (FPC), which has supported other House of Memories projects, such as the memorabilia-packed memory suitcases that can be borrowed, and the contents of which can help carers engage with people living with dementia.

We hope the memory boxes will help to make the festive season a bit more special for people living with dementia and their carers.
