Last week we celebrated House of Memories’ 5th birthday!

We’re delighted that our dementia awareness programme has been running for over five years. During this time we’ve trained over 11,500 paid and family carers across the UK to help people to live well with dementia.

To celebrate we held a birthday bash at the Museum of Liverpool – a special celebration afternoon for carers who have taken part in House of Memories, and their VIPS (the people they care for living with dementia).

Over 100 guests were treated to afternoon tea, music, dancing and a raffle and a wonderful time was had by all.

To mark a fantastic five years we were thrilled to be able to share a new monthly programme of House of Memories workshops for family and friends, and a full schedule of events and activities taking place at the Museum of Liverpool.

Enjoying afternoon tea together

This year saw the launch of the new dedicated, dementia-friendly House of Memories website and a new online shop full of unique products, nostalgic gifts and memorabilia. Every purchase from the shop supports National Museums Liverpool and the great work we do at House of Memories.

We also had a display area showcasing the latest developments to the My House of Memories app. Towards the end of the year a new feature will be launched where users can include their own memories within the app, in addition to the existing museum objects.

Hanging memories on the memory tree

And finally, a new 3D memory tree was on display for guests to hang their favourite memories and thoughts about the celebration afternoon. The tree has been inspired by the original House of Memories memory tree activity which is also replicated in the app.

One of the lovely messages left on the memory tree by a guest summed up the afternoon:

“I have really enjoyed it and would love to come again. I have loved the music and some of the songs have reminded me of my mum and dad.”
