children in a workshop with a woman in period clothing

School’s out for the summer next week! If you’re looking for an interesting way for your child (aged 8-17) to spend a few days over the holidays, try our Young Archaeologists’ Club summer school workshops!

Tuesday 28 July 2015: Sheep to Shirt
A day of hand-on activities to explore what people wore in the past and how things were made: dyed, woven, braided, and sewn! How did the Vikings wash their socks? Why were nettles so important in clothing? Why was wee so important to the Tudors when they dyed their clothes? Answers to questions from history you never thought to ask! Experiment, make and learn in this Travellers Through Time workshop about textile production and fibre craft through the ages. Spin your own yarn, dye some cloth, and learn all kinds of skills to make and take away with you. A historical fashion show at the end of the day will show you how colourful and inventive our ancestors were!
With thanks to Let Clothes Be Clothes campaign.

Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 July 2015: Roman Treasure
The Museum of Liverpool and Congleton Museum have just acquired two hoards of Roman treasure found in Cheshire. The Young Archaeologists will be among the very first people to see and handle these finds in 1800 years! Throughout these two days we will learn about the objects and about the Romano-British period in the north west. The programme will include the chance to meet some Romans, make some Romano-British jewellery, and contribute to the making of a short film about the Cheshire Hoards.
Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

All three sessions run all day – 10am-4pm at the Museum of Liverpool, Education Room 3. Pre-booking is essential!

Membership of Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) for the remainder of 2015 is £20, and your child will be eligible to attend these workshops and our Saturday morning sessions: one in August; one in October; and one in December.

To join YAC and book in to the summer holiday clubs contact Kate.Readle@liverpoolmuseums.org.uk
